1.
Is it difficult to build a cable
descrambler?
No! The plans, some of
which involve no building at all, are very simple
to follow and complete. They include step by step
instructions with clear pictures. It should take no
longer than 20 minutes to complete. No special
skill or knowledge is needed.
2. Do I need
a converter if I have a VCR, cable company box or a
cable ready TV ?
In most instances the
answer is no. A cable ready tv or vcr will
work.
3. What is
an Addressable Cable Box ?
An addressable cable box
is the most common type of box supplies by the
cable companies. It allows the cable companies to
send a signal through the cable line to your box
that will selectively turn on or off premium
channels. It is this technology that allows the
companies to offer pay per view movies that turn on
the movie that you request and then turn it off as
soon as the movie ends. However, both addressable
and non-addressable units have the ability to
receive all premium channels.
4. Cable
company terms:
- Limited basic service:
This normally includes only your local channels
and is the cheapest of the services
- Basic service: This
provides access to local as well as regular
cable channels (ESPN, Lifetime, MTV, Discovery
etc.)
- Premium Service: This
is an add on service for individual premium
channels such as HBO, Showtime, Cinimax
etc.
- Pay Per View: Channels
that offer movies, sports, adult entertainment
or special events and charge by the movie or
program. An addressable type of converter is
supplied by the cable company to receive this
special service.
5. What is a cable tv
converter?
It is an electronic tuner
that converts the cable signal to channel 3 or 4. A
converter can only receive basic cable and does not
contain a descrambler. Your cable company will
supply this when you don't have a cable ready tv.
6. What is a
cable tv descrambler?
A descrambler is an add-on
device that when used with a non addressable
converter, restores the picture and sound of
premium channels.
7. Are cable
descramblers legal?
- Yes! Descramblers are
legal. Since the cable companies can charge a
rental fee for their box it is completely legal
to own your own box. However, you are
technically supposed to inform the cable company
if you own your own box.
